It was a magnificent day for our Under 12 girls, who won the Surrey County Girls Cup Final at Merstham FC.
Having lost both league matches to Epsom Eagles in very close games, Wimbledon were the underdogs. However our girls and management team believed they could triumph on the day, against a previously undefeated side this season, and this was proved to be the case.
A very close first half saw the Dons take the lead when Laura Cole scored an excellent solo effort. Pushing forward, Wimbledon had a couple more opportunities and could easily been two or three ahead by half time.
Chances were also not taken at the other end either and before half time Wimbledon conceded a bizarre goal, the Dons' goalkeeper pushing the ball out only to see it rebound off one of our players into the net. The teams went in 1-1 at half time.
The second half was blessed with some excellent football. Wimbledon continued to push forward and have more opportunities, and the girls should have won the match in normal time.
The teams entered extra time and Wimbledon carried on playing and passing the ball around with finesse. And then Rachel Smith rounded an Epsom Eagles' defender and shot low to the right of their goalkeeper, making the score 2-1.
Wimbledon sought to put the game beyond doubt and played the majority of the second half of extra time in their opponents' half. At the full time whistle, the delight of the team and a large number of supporters was visible for all to see.
It would be wrong to select any individual member of our team for special praise, since they all played so well. The team's very capable captain Emma Nelmes lifted the cup to a huge cheer!
The winning team: Emma Nelmes (c), Alex Barrett, Lucy Berryman, Jenna Brunton, Elle Butcher, Laura Cole, Rachel Mason, Amber Parker, Rachel Smith, Paige Vella.
Also a special mention for Suzy Astwood who scored the Dons' winning goal in the quarter final, who did not play on the day.
