Pre-season starts with a new face

Terry Brown returned from the first day of pre-season training to complete another addition to his squad.

"I am delighted to say we've made another significant signing in Rashid Yussuf, usually known as 'Toks' (pronounced Tooks). Toks is 20, and is a highly talented midfielder with blistering pace, great on the ball and predominantly left-footed. He was previously at Gillingham. He can play either left sided midfield or up front. He will add much-needed pace to last year's squad and we will be looking for him to contribute on the scoresheet as well.

"He trained with the squad on our first day's training today and along with the rest of the lads, trained very well and looked very fit. This was Stuart and my first opportunity to work with our new signings and we were both very pleased with what we saw.

"From Thursday, we will increasing the training schedule and the first week in particular will be very physically demanding. After Saturday's training we are looking next week to work with the squad towards our first pre-season friendly on 10 July, against Charlton Athletic. We will also be looking to play two teams with 45 minutes each. This means that several of our trialists will get an opportunity to push for a place in our squad.

"We are also very close to signing a centre back we've been targeting and I hope to make an announcement towards the end of the week."

Kit launch at Paul Strank Family Fun Day this Saturday!

The Paul Strank Family Fun Day, in aid of Children In Need, takes place this Saturday, 3 July at Southpark Gardens, starting at 11am.

The club will be launching the brand new 2010/2011 kit at the fun day, which the will be modelled by the players on the main stage at 2pm.

A full schedule of events is listed below.

We are expecting thousands of people from the local community to attend this event so we need as many volunteers as possible to help promote the club. If you have a few hours to spare, please e-mail here

Last call for the work weekend

With all the football that is going on right now, it is probably hard to absorb the fact that the Dons' first friendly game is just over two weeks away.

Before that game, there's lots to do to the stadium and so we are appealing for more volunteers to help at the second of this year's work weekends. And don't worry, the England game will be on the big screen in high definition on the Sunday, so volunteers can watch it with fellow fans.

Help is needed for Saturday and Sunday 26 and 27 June, i.e. this coming weekend. Volunteers are needed from 9.00 am onwards but, on the Sunday, we will be stopping for lunch, which is also provided by volunteers, at around 1.00 pm. And the England game will be on the big screen in the afternoon.

At the first weekend in late May, a massive amount of work was done around the stadium and car park, including mowing the grass, cutting back the bushes and undergrowth, power washing the stand and terraces, painting various parts of the stadium, etc etc. But there is still a lot to be done before the pre-season friendlies get underway.

Although most tools will be provided, if you are able to bring your own, in particular power washers, that would be even better. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

If you can help but have not yet told us, please ring the office on 020 8547 3528 to leave your name, contact details, and when you are available. And if you can't yet commit yourself at the moment, but subsequently you find you have some time to spare, you can always just turn up on the day.

Former Don scores against the world champions

Shane Smeltz became the first AFC Wimbledon old boy to score in the World Cup when he hit the target today against the reigning world champions. His goal came when he put the ball away following a free kick early in the game, only to see Italy equalise from a penalty. Nonetheless, this result leaves the Kiwis unbeaten and in with a fighting chance of going through into the last 16.

Shane Smeltz joined the Dons in March 2005 and scored 26 league and cup goals in 50 starts before leaving to join Halifax Town in July 2006 for an undisclosed fee. While his goal today was possibly more important, it wasn't quite as clean a strike as this goal which he scored for the Dons in a cup final against the mighty Walton and Hersham. Click here to see it Shane Smeltz cup goal.

Former AFC Wimbledon boss Dave Anderson said that for once in his life he was speechless but added, on reflection, that it was just as well that the fee for the transfer, which he authorised, was undisclosed.

Kit launch at Paul Strank Family Fun Day!

The new kit is very nearly ready. Everyone who has seen the samples is really excited as both kits are looking really good.

We are thrilled to be able to launch the kit at the Paul Strank Family Fun Day being held at Southpark Gardens on Saturday 3rd July. The kit will be modelled by the 1st team squad on the main stage at 2.00pm. Once they have finished strutting their stuff, you will be able to buy the kit from the club’s merchandise stall. There will be a credit card facility available and a wide selection of merchandise to choose from.

Southpark Gardens is located at the heart of Wimbledon, just off The Broadway. The local business and political community is very much behind this event. We need a big turn out to help continue our growing relationship with our home town on all levels.

There are a wide range of other attractions at the Family Fun Day to keep every member of the family happy including:

- Your first chance top meet the 2010/11 squad as well as the management team and Haydon the Womble

- A fully licensed bar being run by the club

- The Community Football Scheme will be providing a wide range of activities, including a penalty shoot out

- Haydon the Womble will be facing off against Children In Need’s official mascot Pudsey the Bear in a tug of war

- A wide range of food outlets and loads of entertainment including funfair rides and live performances

- Retail outlets selling clothing, jewellery, gift items and more

A significant proportion of the money raised will be donated to Children in Need so we would like to ask as many fans as possible to support this very worthwhile event.

Terry gets his man at last

Terry Brown may be away on holiday at the moment but that didn’t stop him adding Mark Nwokeji to his squad earlier tonight.

Mark first came to the club’s attention when he had an outstanding season for Staines Town, where he featured against the Dons in that memorable play off final. Terry Brown tried to sign him at the time but the lure of league football led him to Dagenham and Redbridge where a promising start was interrupted by a posterior ligament injury. Terry tried again to sign Mark on loan last season but just missed out as he had committed himself to a loan to Luton where he continued his rehabilitation from injury.

Now, at the third attempt, Terry has got his man. Chief Executive Erik Samuelson, who oversaw the signing in the manager’s absence, said “we are delighted to have signed Mark. He is a proven goalscorer, with pace and strength, and he will bring real competition to the front line for the coming season. I remember speaking to Mark at the Ryman League end of season dinner in our promotion season. He was presented with the golden boot award and I told him we would be watching out for him to try to bring him to Kingsmeadow. Although it has taken a little bit longer than we hoped, we’re delighted to see him here.

“With our recent injury record regarding cruciate ligaments we have taken extra precautions in checking Mark’s recovery from injury. Mike Rayner saw him tonight and he has spoken to the Dagenham medical staff who have been very helpful. As an extra precaution, Mark is having a scan tomorrow and if, as we confidently expect, that is clear, the formal paperwork will be completed soon afterwards.”

Mark said “I’ve flirted with this club for a number of years now and now it is great to be here. I’m looking forward to showing the fans my commitment my ability - and some goals.”

Terry signs Andre

Earlier this evening Terry Brown signed Andre Blackman.

“I am absolutely delighted to announce the signing of Andre Blackman. Although this would appear at the outset to be another young signing, I do believe that this particular young man has all the credentials to progress to a much higher level.

“Andre is a very gifted, pacy and talented left back whose career needs to develop with regular first team football in a stable environment. Although he has played youth and reserve team football at a very high level I really believe that being involved in two physically demanding games every week, allied to our full time training, will allow him to progress at Wimbledon and fulfil his tremendous potential.

“Andre’s career so far has been blighted with one or two off-pitch incidents that young people can so easily get dragged into. These have undermined his focus so far as football has been concerned. He has been given opportunities before, which he has failed to take advantage of. As a nineteen year old Andre has always been part of his club’s youth and reserve set up and I do believe that becoming an integral part of our first team set up will give him the impetus he needs to channel his surplus energy into not only getting his career back on track but to allow him to enjoy his football again and express himself in an environment where he can excel.

“As far as the football is concerned we will be looking to exploit Andre’s pace and technical ability on the ball and encouraging him to push forward and express himself. I’m sure playing in front of 3,500 supportive fans will bring the smile back to his face and hopefully put a smile on ours.”

Vinnie's cup medal comes back to Wimbledon

Following a number of meetings between Vinnie Jones and the club's commercial director, Ivor Heller, we are delighted to announce that Vinnie has made a permanent loan of his 1988 FA Cup Winner's medal medal to the club. The following press release was issued to news agencies earlier today.

"Footballer turned Hollywood hardman Vinnie Jones has handed his FA Cup winners medal to AFC Wimbledon to go on show at the non-league club's ground.

The former Wimbledon star who made it big on the silver screen wanted to give something back to the club where he made his name.

The midfielder starred in Wimbledon's famous 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Wembley in 1988 - one of the biggest Cup Final shocks of all time.

Jones, now 45, said: "The medal is a link to the history of the club and I wish them all the best for the future."

Delighted AFC Wimbledon commercial director Ivor Heller said the medal will go on display at the club's Kingsmeadow ground in Kingston, Surrey, for supporters to enjoy.

He said: "When you consider an FA Cup winners medal fetches between £20,000 and £30,000 at auction - and Vinnie's would probably go for more - it is a wonderful gesture.

"We have promised him that on no condition will we ever sell it.

"It may sound strange in football, but some things are more important than money and Vinnie gave it to us on condition that we would not cash in.

"We have been going since 1889 and Vinnie's medal is a reminder of that wonderful day when we stunned the football world."
